After taking Amiah to the hospital for sick kids, I brought her to McDonald’s. Once I sat down and started eating while feeding Amiah, two young men came and sat right next to us. At first, I thought about moving because I felt a bit uneasy.
But then I noticed Amiah wasn’t bothered by them at all; they weren’t causing any trouble, and she wasn’t judging them, so I figured I shouldn’t either.
As I observed them, I noticed they looked like they were in their early 20s, just a few years older than my sons.
One of them pulled out a muffin and handed it to the other, who seemed really grateful. They asked the people at the counter for a cup of water (since it was a self-serve fountain), but the staff told them it cost a dollar, so they didn’t get one.
I saw the staff keep glancing at them and coming over to ask questions, looking annoyed that the guys were just trying to stay warm without buying anything.
So, I stood up and asked if they were thirsty, and one of them replied, “Yes, thank you so much!” As I walked to place my order, I asked if they were hungry too. They said they were, so I offered to get them a McChicken, and they asked for one to share. “Sure thing!” I said.
The staff smiled, the boys smiled, and then one of them turned to Amiah and said, “Wow, you have a really nice mom.” Amiah smiled back, and even though I’m not sure she understood what he said, it made me happy.
It really touched my heart because those boys didn’t choose to be addicts, and seeing them share their last bit of food with each other reminded me how blessed I am to be able to show them some kindness. Let’s all be the kindness we want to see in the world! 🌎✨️
